Wigs, hats, and shoes are all lined up above the numerous Edwardian and Victorian costumes that will be used in the upcoming production of the musical revue "Tintypes" which will be presented by the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 6, and Saturday, July 7, in W. M. Turner Auditorium, and again on Friday, July 13 and Saturday, July 14.
Featuring close to 50 songs dating roughly from 1891 to 1918, the revue examines America at the dawn of the 20th century, explained Alan Nielsen, SFA professor of theatre and the show's director.
"But today, in the dawning of the 21st century, the issues reverberate eerily: immigration, government and big business, disparity between rich and poor, racial and social inequality, and even a hotly debated war. But the issues are never allowed to overpower the charm of the songs," he continued.
Interwoven among songs such as "Yankee Doodle Dandy," "Meet Me in St. Louis," "Shortnin' Bread," and "Hello My Baby" is the story of Charlie the immigrant, explained cast member Izchel Hernandez, San Benito senior.
"Dr. Nielsen has done a great job of editing the script so that the story line flows well for the audience," Hernandez said.
The cast consists of only six actors, but they portray over 20 characters representing a mixture of social classes and cultures. Included among the historical figures are President Teddy Roosevelt, Ziegfeld girl Anna Held, anarchist Emma Goldman and entertainer Charlie Chaplin.
"Because we play so many roles, we're all able to show lots of different sides of our personalities," said Katie Jones, Tyler senior.
The script calls for a variety of entertainment styles also, added Hernandez. "Of course, there's singing and dancing, but there's also quite a bit of physical humor, and we get to act out some silent film scenes. It's a real family show."
"Tintypes, which was conceived by Mary Kyte with Mel Marvin and Gary Pearle, is being presented in repertory fashion with Jon Klein's "Dimly Perceived Threats to the System." Klein's dark comedy will be presented on Wednesday, July 11, and Thursday, July 12. It is recommended for mature audiences.
Tickets to either production are $10 for adults and $5 for seniors or students. For tickets or more information, please visit www.sfasu.edu/finearts or call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
