University to present guest flute recital

March 1, 2006– Sylvia Bierschenk

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present Jessica Dunnavant, visiting assistant professor of music at Texas A & M University, in a guest flute recital at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 9, in Cole Concert Hall. The recital, which features all Baroque music, is free and open to the public.

Christina Guenther-Scott, visiting assistant professor of music at SFA, said she invited Dunnavant to campus because of her expertise on Baroque music and instruments. "We played period instruments together in the Baroque Ensemble at Florida State University, and Jessica is quite good on the traverso, or Baroque flute."

The first half of the program will feature Michel Blavet's "Sonata in G Major, Op. 2, No. 1," Francois Couperin's "Rossignol en Amour," and Johann Mattheson's "Sonata IV in A Minor, Op. 1, No. 12," all of which will be performed on period instruments. Joining Dunnavant on the traverso will be SFA faculty members Guenther-Scott on Baroque alto recorder, Evgeni Raychev on cello and Ron Petti on harpsichord.

During the second half of the program, Dunnavant and Guenther-Scott will play the flute, Raychev will play the cello and Petti will accompany them on the piano as they perform G.P. Telemann's "Trio in G Minor." Dunnavant and Petti will close the recital with "Sonata in A Major, BWV 1032" by J.S. Bach.

While visiting the SFA campus, Dunnavant will give a master class for the flute studio.

Dunnavant received her Bachelor of Music from Middle Tennessee State University, her Master of Music from Florida State University and her Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Maryland. She has won numerous performance competitions, including the Music Teachers National Association Collegiate Artist Competition three times. She was also a finalist in the Homer Ulrich Soloist Competition at the University of Maryland.

Before joining the Texas A & M faculty, Dunnavant was a member of the Jackson (Tenn.) Symphony Orchestra. She has also performed with the Paducah (Ky.) Symphony and Nashville Symphony and was a freelancer and teacher in the Nashville area.

She has taught master classes and presented recitals at universities in Tennessee, Kentucky and Louisiana, and she has served as an adjudicator for the Flute Society of Kentucky and the Middle Tennessee Flute Society. She is published in Flute Talk magazine and is currently the secretary of the Mid-South Flute Society.
