NACOGDOCHES - The Four Hornsmen of the Apocalypse, an elite ensemble from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 22, in Cole Concert Hall on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus. The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music.
Founded in 1997, the ensemble's goal is to combine humor with serious musicianship. The musicians have been guest artists at many horn festivals. They also tour the United States, bringing the horn quartet genre into public schools, colleges and open forums to promote the study and enjoyment of chamber music.
The musicians are all students at the University of Illinois. One of the members, Gerald Wood, received his Bachelor of Music Education from SFA in 1997 and is currently pursuing his doctoral degree. His former instructor at SFA, Charles Gavin, will join the group in presenting a premier of a new horn quintet, "Elegy for Sonja," by Kaz Machala, professor of music at the University of Illinois.
Other ensemble members include Paul Blackstone, a master's student who received his bachelor's degree from North Texas State University; Audrey J. Good, a junior performance major; and Anthony L. Licata, Jr., founding member of The Four Hornsmen and current master's student.
The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, please call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
