Guest saxophone to perform at SFA

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present Eric Lau in a guest saxophone recital on Monday, March 27, at 7:30 p.m. in Cole Concert Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.

Lau will perform Paul Cooper's "Four Impromptus," Ned Rorem's "Picnic on the Marne," Maurice Decruck' s "Sonata in C Sharp" and a work by Sam Merciers that was written for Lau and recently premiered at the North American Saxophone Alliance biennial Conference at the University of Iowa.

An active recitalist, Lau performed at the 2000 and 2003 World Saxophone Congresses and the 1998. 2000, 2002 and 2004 National Saxophone Conferences. He frequently gives master classes at universities across the nation and is a regular performer with the New Mexico Symphony and the Santa Fe Symphony. Lau also serves on the faculty of the Blue Lake Fine Arts camp.

His interest in new music has led to his involvement in the commissioning of new works for saxophone by composers Gunther Schuller, Michael Colgrass, Howard Frazin, John McDonald, Shih-Hui Chen, Javier Arau, Michael Conti, John Richards and Phanos Dymiotis.

Prior to joining the faculty at the University of New Mexico, Lau taught at Olivet College, Hope College and the Crane School of Music of State University of New York, Potsdam. Lau received his undergraduate degree from Louisiana State University and his master's and doctoral degrees from the Michigan State University.
