NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University Steel Band will present its annual spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, in Cole Concert Hall.

The concert will feature many traditional pop, Caribbean and Latin favorites including Black Magic Woman, Rant and Rave, Camino Real, Samba El Gato and Maryanne. The program also includes arrangements of Kokomo and All That She Wants by junior percussion majors and steel band members Freddy Lopez and Joe Robinson.

Scott Harris, SFA assistant professor of music and the group's director, said the Steel Band is one of the most popular and requested ensembles in the School of Music. The group has appeared at Chili's Restaurant, Scare on the Square, the Nine Flags Christmas Festival, the Nacogdoches chili festival and, most recently, at the Texas Music Educators Association convention in San Antonio.

The 12 musicians use a full set of steel pans tuned and cut from 55-gallon oil drums as well as a large rhythm section with drumset, electric bass and various Latin percussion.

Harris invites everyone to wear a Hawaiian shirt and join the group on April 4 for "a memorable evening of fun, excitement and, of course, the traditional Limbo dance--a featured event at every SFA Steel Band performance."

The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, visit www.finearts.sfasu.edu or call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
