Paul Brach's "Music of the Spheres: Ruby Red Rumba" will be included in "Paul Brach: 1985-2005" which opens in SFA's Griffith Gallery Friday, April 7.
NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Art will open "Paul Brach: 1985-2005" in Griffith Gallery on Friday, April 7, with a 6 p.m. gallery talk and reception.
Dr. Bradley C. Bailey, SFA assistant professor of art history and the exhibition's curator, will give the gallery talk in the Music Recital Hall, Room 106 of the Tom and Peggy Wright Music Building, followed immediately with a reception in Griffith Gallery hosted by Nacogdoches Junior Forum.
The retrospective exhibition includes oil paintings, graphite drawings, intaglio prints and color lithographs that are representative of Brach's work completed since his 1985-86 nationally touring exhibition. It will run through Friday, May 5.
Bailey said he had two main objectives in putting together this exhibition. First, he wanted to reflect the past two decades of work by an American artist, educator and critic of great reputation and influence. And, second, he wanted to present to the university and the city "images that will seem familiar and foreign, seduce the eye, and stimulate the mind."
Brach is serving as juror for the "Texas National 2006" competition and exhibition, which opens at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 8, in the School of Art Galleries located in the SFA Art Building off of Wilson Drive. The exhibition will run through Sunday, April 30.
The SFA School of Art created Texas National in 1995. This year, 616 artists from 48 states and the District of Columbia entered the competition, and works by 78 artists are included in the exhibition. The winners will be announced at that exhibition's opening.
"Paul Brach: 1985-2005" and "Texas National 2006" are both sponsored in part by Nacogdoches Junior Forum, SFA Friends of the Arts and Texas Commission on the Arts. Additionally, Pat Dolan and Linda Mock are partial sponsors of the Brach exhibition, and "Texas National 2006" is sponsored in part by 3M Investments and Dr. David A. Lewis.
Regular hours for Griffith Gallery are 12:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, and hours for the School of Art Galleries are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Admission to the openings and exhibitions is free.
