Charles Gavin, SFA professor of music, will present a faculty horn recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, in Cole Concert Hall.
NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Charles Gavin, professor of music at Stephen F. Austin State University, will present a faculty horn recital, "Music Old, Music New, Music Borrowed, Music Blue," at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus. James Pitts, SFA staff accompanist, will serve as the collaborative pianist.
The recital's title is a reflection of the chosen program, explained Gavin.
Beginning with the "music old" and "music borrowed," Gavin and Pitts will perform two transcriptions of music by J.S. Bach. A concerto by Ellen Taffe Zwilich will serve as the "music new," and "Mother Goose Suite" for horn, narrator and piano by Jeffrey Agrell can be categorized as both "new" and "borrowed." Finally, Gustav Mahler's "Songs of a Wayfarer" will serve as "music blue" since one of the songs in the song cycle is about a lover's blue eyes.
Gavin joined the SFA music faculty in 1984 where he teaches horn and chamber music, serves as the principal horn in the Orchestra of the Pines and is a member of the Stone Fort Wind Quintet.
He also performs with the Rapides Symphony Orchestra of Alexandria, La., Lake Charles Symphony Orchestra and Pineywoods Brass Quintet. He was a soloist t the 23rd International Horn Symposium and regularly performs at regional horn workshops.
The recital is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students.
