NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present Chris Gekker in a guest trumpet recital at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 22, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus. The recital is free and open to the public.
Gekker, professor of trumpet at the University of Maryland, has been featured as a soloist at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. After his performance at Carnegie Hall, The New York Times praised his "bright virtuosity" and described his playing as "clear toned and pitch perfect."
Gekker was a member of the American Brass Quintet for 18 years and on the faculties of the Julliard School, the Manhattan School of Music and Columbia University. He has been a guest principal trumpet with the New York Philharmonic, the San Francisco Symphony and the Santa Fe Opera.
"We are pleased to bring Chris to campus," said Gary Wurtz, assistant professor of music and director of trumpet studies at SFA. "His performance will be outstanding, and our students will have an opportunity to study with him in a master class setting."
