NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - On Monday, April 2, the W.M. Turner Auditorium will be filled with energy as the Seán Curran Company dances its way across the stage. The troupe is appearing as a part of the Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts' University Series. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m.
The beauty and athleticism for which this dance company is internationally known inspired the Los Angeles Times to pronounce, "There is no fresher, more invigorating, new American dance now than the choreography of Seán Curran."
Since Curran formed the company in 1997, it has performed throughout the United States, France and Germany. It won national recognition with the 1999 National Dance Project commission by the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival and has been awarded grants from organizations such as the National Endowment for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts and the Arts International's Fund for US Artists.
Curran, a Boston native, began his dance training with traditional Irish step dancing and later made his mark as a leading dancer with the Bill T. Jones /Arnie Zane Dance Company.
A graduate and guest faculty member of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, Curan was an original member of the New York City cast of the Off-Broadway percussion extravaganza, "Stomp," performing in the show for four years.
He has recently choreographed productions for The Shakespeare Theater, New York City Opera and Playwright's Horizons' Broadway production of James Joyce's "The Dead." He has also created works for dance companies throughout the United States and in Denmark and Sweden.
Prior to the company's performance, Elizabeth Rhodes, SFA professor of dance, will give a 7 p.m. informative talk in Griffith Gallery, located across the hall from Turner Auditorium. After the performance, the SFA College of Fine Arts will host a reception to honor the event's corporate sponsor, BancorpSouth of Nacogdoches.
