NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Art will open "James Snyder: Old and New, Selected Works" at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, in Griffith Gallery on the SFA campus.

Snyder, retired SFA professor of art, has selected for the exhibition works that span nearly 40 years and include a variety of media: pen and ink illustrations, drawings, watercolors, portraits, oil paintings, etchings, jewelry and metal work.

"Jim is happy to be exhibiting this wide range of work, and I believe the East Texas community will enjoy seeing it," said Shannon Bailey, SFA galley director. "His pieces are always a very popular part of our faculty exhibitions."

A native of Marshall, Mich., Snyder attended Western Michigan University before moving in 1960 to further his education at Utah State University, where he earned his Master of Fine Arts with an emphasis in painting and photography.

Snyder joined the SFA art faculty in 1966. During his 38-year teaching career, he taught drawing, design, ad design, ceramics, art metal and jewelry, photography, art history of the American West, watercolor and oil painting.

Snyder's artwork is represented in corporations from Michigan to Houston and in many private collections across the United States.
Locally, his work may be seen in SFA's Ralph W. Steen Library and William R. Johnson Coliseum, the Diboll Civic Center and the Boys and Girls Club of Lufkin.
