NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Metal artworks by Stephen F. Austin State University students have been selected for exhibitions during the Society of North American Goldsmiths conference being held in Savannah, Ga., March 5 through 8.

A spoon by Sara Kreuter, Georgetown senior, will be exhibited in "Surge: SNAG Juried Student Exhibition" Friday, March 7, through Friday, March 28, in Savannah's Gallery S.P.A.C.E. According to the society's Web site, "Surge" is "a showcase of the best student work from college and university metalsmithing and jewelry programs across North America."

Kreuter's work was also selected for inclusion in "Cresting: Juried Student Digital Image Show," alongside spoons by Brian Kempf, Cypress senior, and Debra Szczepanski, December 2007 graduate from Port Neches. Up to 800 educators, graduate and undergraduate students, collectors, critics and studio artists will attend this slide event, explained Gary Schott, SFA visiting assistant professor of art.

The students' acceptance into these events is an honor for them as well as for SFA's program, Schott continued. "The exhibition committee probably received thousands of submissions, but the jurors selected only a small percentage of those. SFA is being well represented alongside historically stronger programs."

Kreuter and Kempf are both pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in studio art, concentrating in the art metal/jewelry program. Schott anticipates this recognition by SNAG will inspire the students to keep pushing themselves towards higher goals.
