SFA to present faculty percussion recital

March 17, 2008 - Sylvia Bierschenk

Scott Harris, SFA assistant professor of percussion, will present a faculty percussion recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus, 2210 Alumni Drive.

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Scott Harris, director of percussion and assistant professor of music at Stephen F. Austin State University, will perform a percussion recital Tuesday, March 25, at 7:30 p.m. in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

The program will feature a collection of innovative and contemporary works for solo and chamber percussion. Solo works include "Kim" by Askell Masson for snare drum, "Different Ways" by Eckhard Kopetzki for timpani and "Ultimatum 1" by Nebojsa Zivkovic for marimba.

"These pieces will be very exciting for the audience because of the variety of non-traditional performance techniques used in each solo," explained Harris. "For instance, the snare piece calls for rim shots, a cymbal will be played on top of the timpani head, and a rock-n-roll groove will be used on the marimba."

Harris will be joined by guest musicians to perform three chamber works that feature the marimba. Christina Guenther, assistant professor of flute, will perform on James Barry's "Crush," a five-movement piece that was written for her in 2005.

Brian Utley, assistant professor of saxophone, and Harris will present Akira Yuyama's "Divertimento for Alto Saxophone and Marimba," and Kayla Roth, Lufkin senior, will join Harris in performing a work for two marimbas, "Conversation in the Forest" by Keiko Abe.

"These last two pieces are established, high energy works that demonstrate difficult extended techniques as well as improvisational approaches to performance,"said Harris.

As director of percussion studies at SFA, Harris directs the Percussion Ensemble and Steel Band and oversees the Lumberjack Marching Drumline. He also directs/coordinates the annual SFA Summer Percussion Symposium. He is currently the principal percussionist and timpanist for the Orchestra of the Pines.

He has presented clinics and concerts at conventions and conferences for the Percussive Arts Society, the Texas Music Educators Association, the Texas Bandmasters Association, the National Conference on Percussion Pedagogy and the College Music Society.

The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music. Cole Concert Hall is located at 2210 Alumni Drive.

Tickets for the recital are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, please visit www.sfasu.edu/finearts or call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
