College students who think summer school shouldn’t mean giving up your summer vacation can have the best of both worlds this summer at Stephen F. Austin State University. For the first time, a 12-day term called May-mester will be offered, with classes meeting weekdays from May 12 through May 28.
“For students who live off campus and pay rent through the end of May, this will allow them to make good use of their rent money, stay in town until the end of the month, and earn academic credit while they are here,” said Dr. Richard Berry, SFA provost and vice president for academic affairs.
A three-credit-hour course during May-mester will meet for 3 hours and 15 minutes each day. Because of the intensity of courses offered during such a short time period, students will be allowed to enroll in no more than four hours of coursework.
Regular summer session classes begin at SFA on June 2, but the academic week will be shortened to Monday through Thursday. Summer I courses will continue through July 3, and Summer II begins July 8. Final exams for the second summer session are scheduled for Friday, Aug. 8.
Although classes will not meet on Fridays, university offices will be open during regular business hours.
While the work-week for students has been shortened, online course offerings have been expanded for the summer.
“Students who plan to return home for the summer still have the opportunity to earn credit toward the completion of their degrees, whether they are on campus or not,” Berry said. “We’ve really made every effort to re-design our summer offerings with students in mind, to allow time for work, travel, relaxation or participation in internships.”
