NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Art will open "Dave Ngirailemensang: Construction & Deconstruction, Study of Human Form and Light" at 6 p.m. Friday, May 26, in the School of Art Galleries located in the Art Building off of Wilson Drive.
The opening, which is free and open to the public, will include a gallery talk and reception. The exhibition will run through Friday, June 30.
Ngirailemensang, visiting assistant professor of art at SFA and native of Palau, has chosen for the exhibition his most recent self-portraits. He works mainly with oil paint and graphite but has lately introduced phototropic imagery and printmaking to open up new challenges technically, visually and conceptually.
"My goal is to incorporate my culture, American culture and my understanding of Western paintings in my work," Ngirailemensang said. "The mug shot paintings and drawings are not about one's own stereotypical image, but they are studies and explorations of ideas, experience and beliefs which I value as a painter. I am trying to pose a question for myself in trying to understand the issue of race/ethnicity, rather than trying to give myself a direct and concrete answer."
Ngirailemensang received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from Southwest Missouri State University and his Master of Fine Arts in painting from the University of Washington.
While in Seattle, he was selected as the top incoming graduate student and received several scholarships and awards. He taught introductory classes in drawing, painting and figure drawing.
While at SFA this past year, he has taught Drawing I, Design I and Expressive Drawing. During the summer sessions and next year, his teaching assignments will include Drawing I, Painting II and Drawing III.
The School of Art Galleries are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Parking is available off of Wilson Drive, near the SFA Arboretum.
