SFA Music Preparatory Division offers summer lessons and camps

Lacie Carpenter will be teaching private fiddle lessons in July and August through the Stephen F. Austin State University Music Preparatory Division. Registrations are now being accepted for all of the division's summer programs.

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Private music lessons for students of all ages, music discovery camps for second through sixth graders and Kindermusik camps for newborns through 7 year olds are all part of the summer program offered by the Music Preparatory Division at Stephen F. Austin State University.

"As usual, we will offer FlexLessons for private study of piano, voice, guitar, harp, flute, Suzuki violin, cello and traditional violin," said Pat Barnett, division director. "But new this summer, will be our private lessons in fiddling."

Lacie Carpenter, SFA sophomore who has been trained in classical violin for 10 years and in folk usic/fiddle for seven years, will be teaching fiddling in July and the first two weeks of August. Anyone who has at least one year of violin experience is eligible to study with her.

Brenda Josephsen, Suzuki violin teacher, and Alan Scott, classical guitar instructor, will be teaching June through mid-July.

"Students interested in our FlexLesson program may sign up for either four, six or eight lessons lasting 30, 45 or 60 minutes, " explained Barnett. "We recognize that families' summer schedules are full, so we offer a variety of flexible options."

Students in second through sixth grade may enrich their musical knowledge and participate in creative games and crafts during "Musical Stories and Suites," a Music Discovery Camp which will meet from 9 a.m.
to noon, Monday, July 9, through Friday, July 13.

"For example, campers will study the Old West as they listen to the many musical sections of Billy the Kid, learn the stories behind the Mother Goose Suite and study the instruments of the orchestra while hearing Peter and the Wolf," said Jennifer Weems, camp director.

Cost for "Musical Stories and Suites" is $65 and includes all supplies. Registration deadline is Wednesday, June 27.

Two separate Kindermusik Adventure Camps will be held Monday, July 23, through Friday, July 27. Caregivers and their 3- to 4-year-olds may register for "On the Road," which will meet from 9:30 to 11 a.m., and 4- to 7-year-olds may participate in "Tell Me a Tale" from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Cost is $110 and $120, respectively.

Two Kindermusik Adventure Camps for younger children will be held Monday, July 30, through Friday Aug. 3. Caregivers and their newborns to 18-month-olds may participate in the "Oh, What Busy Days" camp from
9 to 9:45 a.m., and 18-month- to 3-year-olds may attend "Creatures in My Backyard" from 10 to 11 a.m. Cost is $75 and $100, respectively.

Karen Greer, certified Kindermusik instructor, will teach all four camps. Registration deadline is Tuesday, July 10.
