Sylvia Bierschenk - May 6, 2008

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Private music lessons for children and adults, a music discovery camp for second through sixth graders, Kindermusik camps for newborns through 7-year-olds and adult piano classes are all part of the summer program offered by the Music Preparatory Division at Stephen F. Austin State University.

The FlexLessons offered by the division enable students to sign up for either four, six of eight private lessons in piano, voice, guitar, harp, flute, clarinet, trumpet, percussion, Suzuki and traditional violin, fiddle, cello or bass, explained Pat Barnett, division director. "We recognize that families' summer schedules are full, so we offer a variety of flexible options between the weeks of May 26 and Aug. 4."

Adult piano classes, taught by Ping-Ting Lan on Mondays from 6 to 7:30 p.m., are another option for adults. These will begin on June 23 and continue through July 28 in SFA's Griffith Fine Arts Building. Cost is $85.

Students in second through sixth grade can explore musical theater while enrolled in "Curtain Call," a Music Discovery Camp which will meet from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday, Aug. 4, through Friday, Aug. 8. Under the direction of instructor Jennifer Weems, students will write their own musical and perform it at the end of camp for family and friends. The $65 tuition covers supplies. Registration deadline is Monday, July 28.

Parents of newborns through 7-year-olds will have more options this summer for enrolling their children in Kindermusik Adventure Camps. Karen Greer, certified Kindermusik instructor, will offer three camps at St. Cyprian's Episcopal School in Lufkin and three at the Wright Music Building on the SFA campus.

The Lufkin classes will be held Monday, July 14, through Friday, July 18. "Zoo Train," for children 18 months to 3 years, will meet from 9 to 10 a.m.; "Creatures at the Ocean," for 3- to 4-year-olds, will meet from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.; and "Around the World," for 5-to 7-year-olds, will meet from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Tuition for the camps is $100, $110 and $120, respectively.

In Nacogdoches, Greer will offer two camps Monday, July 28, through Friday, Aug. 1. "Oh, What Busy Days," for newborns to 18-month-olds, will meet from 9 to 9:45 a.m., and "Zoo Train," for children 18 months to 3 years, will meet from 3 to 4 p.m. Tuition is $75 and $100, respectively.

The third camp in Nacogdoches, "Creatures at the Ocean," will be taught to 3- and 4-year-olds from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 4, through Friday, Aug. 8. Cost is $110.
