Patty Ellison, left, and Regina Low, faculty members at Stephen F. Austin State University, recently received a grant to attend a Geriatric Nursing Education Consortium conference focused on the unique healthcare needs of the elderly with diseases such as diabetes, depression, heart disease and cancer. Low said educating nurses to effectively assess and care for the aging population is an important goal of the Richard and Lucille DeWitt School of Nursing at SFA, because the number of people older than 65 is expected to increase 25 to 35 percent in the next 30 years. According to conference administrators, these healthcare issues, common to many ages, show different symptoms in those older than 65. The conference was funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation and held in San Antonio.
