SFA names interim marketing director

Shirley Luna - May 20, 2008

Shirley Luna has been named interim executive director of marketing at Stephen F. Austin State University.

“Shirley has more than 20 years of experience in journalism and public relations,” said Dr. Baker Pattillo, SFA president. “Her understanding of the news media and higher education will allow her to ably fill this position, and we appreciate her willingness to serve in this capacity.”

A native of Center, Luna holds both a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in communication from SFA. A former Daily Sentinel reporter, Luna worked as a freelance writer for 10 years, serving clients including the SFA Alumni Association, the Court Club and an international cattleman’s association based in Nacogdoches, the United Braford Breeders.

Luna joined the Office of Public Affairs in July 1998 as editorial coordinator and was later promoted to assistant director and then associate director for media relations. She will continue to serve as editor of the university magazine, The SFA Vista. Luna has been recognized twice by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education with awards for medical and scientific writing.

In addition to serving as chair of the Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce’s education committee, Luna serves as publicity chair for the Boy Scouts of America Naconiche District.

Luna replaces Andy Kesling, who recently resigned as executive director of marketing after two years with the university. The director oversees SFA’s Office of Public Affairs, Web Development Office and Printing Services.

Pattillo said a committee would be named in the coming weeks to lead the search for a permanent marketing director.
