SFA's Chamber Orchestra concert to feature Dalmas and Goodall
NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts, School of Music and Orchestra Series will present the Chamber Orchestra in its second concert of the season at 7:30 p.m.
Thursday, Nov. 30, in Cole Concert Hall.
The orchestra will open the concert with Edward Elgar's "Serenade for Strings, Op. 20," a short work filled with small tunes written for his wife on their third wedding anniversary, and close the concert with Joseph Haydn's "Symphony No. 94 in G Major."
Haydn's Symphony No. 94 is commonly known as "The Surprise" because of the loud chord that interrupts the simple melody in the second movement, explained Gene Moon, the orchestra's director.
Guest artists Jennifer Dalmas, violin, and John W. Goodall, oboe, will be the featured soloists during J.S. Bach's "Concerto for Violin and Oboe in D minor, BWV 1060."
Dalmas, assistant professor of music, joined the SFA faculty in 2003 where she teaches violin and viola. She serves as concertmaster of the Orchestra of the Pines, is a co-founder of the Pineywoods Youth Orchestra and is a founding member of The Alazan Trio.
She received her bachelor's degree from Mary Washington College in Virginia and her master's and doctoral degrees from Florida State University. She has performed as a soloist and with orchestras in the United States, Europe and Central America.
Goodall, interim dean of the College of Fine Arts and professor of music, has been a member of the SFA faculty since 1980. He is the principal oboe for the Orchestra of the Pines, a founding member of the Stone Fort Wind Quintet and the artistic director of the Chamber Music in the Pines Festival.
He is in demand as a soloist and clinician and has performed in major venues throughout the United States and Europe. Goodall received his bachelor's degree from East Carolina University, his master's from Kent State and his doctoral degree from the University of North Texas.
Tickets for the concert are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, please visit www.finearts.sfasu.edu or call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
