SFA's Chamber Winds and Symphonic Band to present concert

Sylvia Bierschenk - November 21, 2006

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present the Symphonic Band and Chamber Winds in the bands' final concert of the semester at 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday, Nov. 28, in W. M. Turner Auditorium.

The Symphonic Band will open the concert under the direction of graduate assistant Kevin Whitelaw, who is completing his requirements for a Master of Music in Conducting. Each of the pieces on the program is based on old or ancient things.

The band will begin with Jiri Linek's "Coronation Intradas," which is based on Baroque fanfares for trumpet, horn and timpani, and Pavael Tschesnokoff''s "Salvation is Created," a band arrangement of a choral piece for the Russian Orthodox Church.

The Symphonic Band's program also includes Frank Ticheli's "Vesuvius,"
a depiction of the people of Pompeii's final days, and W. Paris Chambers' "The Boys of the Old Brigade," one of the most well-known marches for band.

David W. Campo, SFA associate director of bands, will direct the Chamber Winds in performing Eric Whitacre's "October" and Vincent Persichetti's "Symphony No. 6 for Band."

Written in 1958 for the Washington University Band, the symphony is considered "ground-breaking," according to Campo. "While most of the original band literature of that time period was thickly scored with lots of instruments doubling parts, large portions of Persichetti's symphony score look like chamber music. It had a profound influence on future compositions," Campo explained.

Tickets for the concert are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, please visit www.finearts.sfasu.edu or call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
