SFA saxophone professor to perform solo with Shreveport Symphony Orchestra

Brian Utley, SFA assistant professor of music, will perform as the guest saxophone soloist with the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra during its "Cinematastic" concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, in the Riverview Theater in Shreveport.

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Brian Utley, assistant professor of music at Stephen F. Austin State University, will be the saxophone soloist during the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra's concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, in the Riverview Theater, Shreveport.

Utley will perform John Williams' "Escapades," which is based on the composer's soundtrack of the film "Catch Me if You Can."

"Williams took the soundtrack which prominently features the saxophone and arranged it into a three-movement suite for solo saxophone and orchestra," explained Utley.

The concert, titled "Cinematastic," also features film music by Aaron Copland, Dmitri Shostakovich, George Gershwin and Nina Rota, an Italian composer who wrote the music for "The Godfather."

Utley, a native of Owensboro, Ken., earned his Bachelor of Music from Murray State University and both his Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts from Louisiana State University. All three degrees were in saxophone performance.

He has presented guest artist recitals at colleges and universities in Kentucky, Texas, Alabama and New Mexico and performs in a variety of chamber music settings, including collaborations with the Stone Fort Wind Quintet and fellow SFA faculty members. He is also a co-founder of the award-winning Red Stick Saxophone Quartet and a regular presenter at regional and national conferences of the North American Saxophone Alliance.
