SFA bands to present 'Movements' concert

Sylvia Bierschenk - November 28, 2007

Charles Gavin, SFA professor of music, will be the featured soloist during the SFA Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony's joint concert at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, in W.M. Turner Auditorium. Gavin will join the Wind Symphony in performing John Zdechlik's "Concerto for French Horn and Band."

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony will present a joint concert, "Movements," at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, in W.M. Turner Auditorium. As the concert's title suggests, both bands will be performing multi-movement works.

The Symphonic Band, conducted by Assistant Director of Bands Brett A. Richardson, will open the concert with Gustav Holst's "Second Suite in F., Op. 28," and Fred J. Allen, SFA director of bands, will guest conduct a band transcription of Aaron Copland's "Down a Country Lane."

"This transcription by the former conductor of the 'President's Own' Marine Band, Col. John R. Bourgeois, contains the origins of what we know today as the 'Marine's Hymn,'" said Richardson. "It is a very light-hearted and energetic work that will be a great finish to the first half of the concert."

Under the direction of David W. Campo, SFA associate director of bands, the Wind Symphony will perform Vincent Persichetti's six-movement "Divertimento for Band, Op. 42" and Anthony Iannacone's two-movement "After a Gentle Rain."

Allen will guest conduct William Schuman's "When Jesus Wept," a piece Campo describes as "an extraordinarily sensitive setting of a sacred melody."

The concert will conclude with SFA Professor of Music Charles Gavin joining the Wind Symphony in performing John Zdechlik's three-movement "Concerto for French Horn and Band."

"Written for the composer's daughter, herself a horn player, the concerto showcases the heroic tone and lyrical sensitivity of the horn," Campo said. "Having Dr. Gavin join us for this work is a real treat for the band and me, as well as the audience."

The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, please visit www.sfasu.edu/finearts or call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
