NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present a joint concert of the Symphonic Band and Chamber Winds at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, in W.M.
Turner Auditorium.

Under the direction of graduate assistant Kevin Whitelaw, the Symphonic Band will perform "Florentine March," a popular work by Julius Fucik which salutes the city of Florence, and Percy Grainger's "Shepherd's Hey."

David W. Campo, associate director of bands at SFA, will guest conduct "Upon the Wings of the Wind," a new composition by William Harbinson, and Fred J. Allen, SFA director of bands, will guest conduct "Blessed Are They," an arrangement of the first movement of Johannes Brahms' "A German Requiem."

Included on the Chamber Winds' portion of the program is music of teachers and students.

"We will open with Howard Hanson's 'Chorale and Alleluia," followed by a piece by Hanson's student, Clifton Williams," said Campo, the band's director. "Caccia and Chorale," written while Williams was battling cancer, was the prolific composer's final composition.

"We will close the concert with 'Incantation and Dance,' an exciting piece by Williams' student, John Barnes Chance," said Campo. "While the incantation portion is full of mystery, unstable, and without fixed tonality, the dance section is full of rhythmic complexity and intensity. As percussion and other instruments are added, the dance grows more frenzied, culminating in a shattering climax of exaltation."

Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For ticket or more information, please visit www.finearts.sfasu.edu or call
