SFA Homecoming festivities planned

Shirley Luna - October 12, 2006

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Homecoming activities at Stephen F. Austin State University will begin on Friday, Oct. 20, with a lighted parade and a music-filled block party at the commuter parking lot across from William R. Johnson Coliseum.

In addition to the live entertainment, the pep rally will feature the traditional line-up of the presentation of the Homecoming Court, introduction of Lumberjack football captains, a welcome from the university president, the marching band, and SFA spirit team performances.

According to Michael Preston, assistant director of student affairs, after consulting with state and local fire mashals, the university decided to redesign homecoming activities and omit the university’s traditional bonfire.

“We feel the fire danger is just too significant to continue with this traditional program,” Preston said. “Unfortunately, some recent rain and cooler temperatures have not made a huge impact on the local fire conditions, and we think this is the best measure to ensure a safe homecoming and a great time for everyone.”

The ceremony begins at 8 p.m. on the steps of the Rusk Building with music by the Brad Wilson Band. The parade will begin at 9 and lead celebrants to East College Avenue and on to the commuter lot. Glow sticks will be distributed, and the Lumberjack Marching Band will lead the parade.

“Celebrate SFA! Block Party and Pep Rally” begins at 9:30 p.m. and will feature world renowned percussion band “Recycled Percussion” sponsored by the Student Activities Association.

Midnight Mardi Gras Madness begins at 11:30 in William R. Johnson Coliseum.
