NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University A Cappella Choir will present music from 1500 to the present day in its first concert of the season at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, in Cole Concert Hall.
Under the direction of Dr. Tim King, SFA professor of music, the choir will perform choral pieces in a wide variety of styles, beginning with Baroque pieces by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck and Henry Purcell.
Also included on the program are "Quartette, opus 31" by Johannes Brahms and Peter Louis Van Dijk's "Horizons," which was written at the request of the popular performing group, King's Singers, for its 1995 South African tour.
Four soloists, Sulphur Springs junior Monica Lancaster, Lufkin graduate student Erin Roth, Lewisville junior John Green and Orange graduate student Joel Bourdier, will be featured on "Hymn to St. Cecilia" by Benjamin Britten.
The choir will close the concert with "I Thank You God" by Gwyneth Walker, which is based on a poem by e.e. cummings.
Dr. Ron Petti, SFA associate professor of music, serves as the choir's accompanist.
The A Cappella Choir is the premier choral ensemble at SFA, open to singers by audition only. This concert is the group's first since returning from its European tour in which they were invited to participate in the celebration surrounding the 250th anniversary of W.A. Mozart's birth.
