NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present "Something's Afoot," a fundraiser for SFA keyboard scholarships, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27, in Cole Concert Hall.

The piano concert will feature performances by SFA keyboard faculty and selected scholarship winners. Shirley Watterston, former piano faculty member, and Fred J. Allen, director of bands at SFA, will serve as emcees.

"The event's title points to the fact that we always have a 'surprise'
element to the piano fundraisers," said Dr. Andrew Parr, SFA professor of music and the event's coordinator. "This time we are telling people there is 'something afoot,' but we're not saying directly what 'foot'
has to do with playing the piano."

Faculty duets include Andrew and Linda Parr performing a piece for two pianos written by Andrew's college professor, Earl Kelly, and a transcription of a violin sonata by J.S. Bach. Instructors Gene Moon and Mario Ajero will play a four-hand arrangement by Ludwig van Beethoven of the first movement of his "Eroica" Symphony.

Student performers will offer major classical piano works by Robert Schumann, Frédéric Chopin and Franz Liszt. Additionally, a jazz trio will play "Ain't Misbehavin'" by Fats Waller.

Faculty solo performances include Ron Petti, associate professor, playing Jere Hutcheson's "Cosmic Suite" and Parr performing a piece by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Aaron Kernis that somehow involves the foot.

The concert will end with four performers--Ajero, Mary Cooper, Moon and Petti--performing Aram Khachaturian's "Sabre Dance" arranged by N. Jan Tan.

Immediately after the concert, the SFA Friends of Music will sponsor a reception.

Currently, the SFA School of Music has about 20 piano majors and offers
11 or 12 piano scholarships.

"With the rising costs of higher education, it is essential for us to assist good students with their financial burden in attending SFA,"
said Andrew Parr. "If we do not, they will simply go elsewhere, even if they strongly desire to come here."

Parr added that the general School of Music funds are shared among all areas, but all proceeds from "Something's Afoot" will stay in the keyboard area and be available only for student pianists.

General admission tickets are $25 each; children and students are admitted free.
Special donor tickets with reserved seating are also available. For tickets, please call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
