SFA Percussion Ensemble

The SFA Percussion Ensemble will present its fall concert at
7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of
Fine Arts and School of Music will present the Percussion Ensemble in
its annual fall concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, in Cole Concert
Hall.

Under the direction of Dr. Scott Harris, SFA assistant professor of
music, the 16-member group will perform works from a variety of
percussion and musical styles.

"We will open the concert with 'Ogoun Badagris,' an exciting and
aggressive drum quintet by Christopher Rouse," said Harris. "This
energetic work is derived from Haitian drumming patterns and aspects of
voodoo ritual."

Senior percussion majors Freddy Lopez and Stephanie Shing will be
featured soloists on two ragtime arrangements by the legendary
xylophonist Bob Becker.

Also included on the program will be "Brooms Hilda," a theatre piece by
Chris Crockarell which is based on a portion of the Broadway hit
"Stomp." The players use ordinary household brooms to create intricate
rhythms within choreographed movements.

The concert will close with "At the Dawn of War," a massive work by
Houston native Kevin Erickson, explained Harris. "The work,
commissioned and premiered by the University of Houston Percussion
Ensemble in 2003, is an emotional and powerful tour de force for the
large percussion ensemble."

Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For
