NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present The Madrigal Singers in concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 6, in Cole Concert Hall.
The 16-member ensemble is comprised of some of SFA's finest vocal students, said Dr. Tim King, SFA professor and the Madrigal's director. "Focusing on a repertoire of music from the 16th century to present day, the group has built an extensive reputation throughout Texas, and in particular, in the East Texas region," King added.
The highlight of the concert will be the performance of Benjamin Britten's "Ad majorem Dei gloriam," or "For the Greater Glory of God."
"The work is arguably the most difficult vocal composition that the great British composer composed," said King. "It captures the intensity of the seven poems by Gerard Manley Hopkins on which the piece is based."
Also included on the program is a set of 16th century love songs and "Three Songs from Shakespeare's 'Twelfth Night'" by Kenneth Neufeld, which features jazz harmonies.
The Madrigal Singers will close the program with Grayston Ives' arrangement of "Name that Tune," which is literally a melody game played with the audience, King explained.
Tickets for the concert are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, please visit www.finearts.sfasu.edu or call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
