SFA faculty duo to present piano recital

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present James Pitts and Ping-Ting Lan in a solo and duo piano faculty recital at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

Together, the husband-wife team will perform Claude Debussy's "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun," Robert Schumann's "Fantasy in f minor for Piano Duet" and W.A. Mozart's "Duettino Concertante for Two Pianos." Each pianist will also present two solo pieces.

Pitts will perform Manuel de Falla's "Fantasia Baetica" and Frédéric Chopin's "Scherzo No. 4," and Lan will perform Chopin's "Barcarolle" and Sergei Rachmoninoff's "Etude-Tableau in c minor."

Pitts joined the SFA faculty as staff accompanist in 2000. He received his bachelor's degree from Baylor University and his master's and doctoral degrees in piano performance from the University of North Texas.

Pitts is an active solo performer, giving recitals frequently. He recently participated in the International Competition of the 20th Century Piano Music in Orleans, France, where he was a semi-finalist. He has been a soloist with the Waco Symphony Orchestra, Central Texas Orchestra, Houston Civic Orchestra, North Dallas Symphony Orchestra, University of North Texas Orchestra and Orchestra of the Pines.

At SFA, Pitts has been the pianist for the SFA Opera, Choral Union and Women's Choir. He maintains an active schedule as a collaborative pianist, performing in faculty, guest artist and student recitals, competitions, auditions and master classes.

Lan, who received her doctoral degree in piano performance from the University of North Texas, has given numerous solo recitals in the United States and her native Taiwan. At SFA, she has performed with the Choral Union, Women's Choir and SFA Chamber Orchestra and teaches Class Piano.

Lan also maintains a large class of students of all ages through SFA's Music Preparatory Division.
