SFA to stage 'The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow'

Sylvia Bierschenk - October 2, 2007

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre will present a student-directed production of Rolin James' "The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow" in the Downstage Theater of the Griffith Fine Arts Building at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13.

Director Chad Kinsman, San Antonio senior, said the full-length show explores how we use technology to define ourselves and to create a cyber-reality that is more real than human interaction.

The plot centers around Jennifer Marcus, a 20-something-year-old adoptee whose agoraphobia, or fear of crossing open spaces, keeps her from traveling to China to meet her birth mother. When Jennifer builds and sends a robot she names Jenny Chow to China in her stead, her birth mother's reaction and the subsequent aftermath leaves Jennifer questioning more than just her roots, explained Kinsman.

Cast members include Arlington senior Cara Boden, playing Jenny Chow; Fort Worth freshman Jake Grubb, playing Todd; Sugarland senior Grace Lubeck, playing Adele; Houston sophomore Susan Ly, playing Jennifer Marcus; Arlington sophomore Chris Matragos, playing Everyman; and Lufkin junior Chad McElveen, playing Mr. Marcus.

The play is recommended for mature audiences.

Tickets are $5 each. For tickets or more information, please call (936) 468-6407.
