SFA to present faculty trombone recital

Sylvia Bierschenk - Oct. 24, 2007

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present Deb Scott in a faculty trombone recital, "Trans-Atlantic Dialogue," at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

The recital, titled "Trans-Atlantic Dialogue," includes works written between 1950 and 1998 by French, American and English composers. James Pitts, SFA staff accompanist, will provide piano accompaniment.

Scott and Pitts will perform "Choral, Cadence et Fugato" by Henri Dutilleaux, Richard Peaslee's "Arrows for Time" and Philip Wilby's "White-Knuckle Ride."

"Wilby's is a fun, adventuresome piece with lots of twists and turns that portrays a roller coaster ride--thus, the white knuckles," said Scott.

Scott Harris, SFA assistant professor of percussion, will join Scott and Pitts in presenting "Rebellion" by Stephen Rush.

"My children aren't yet teenagers, but if the piece, 'Rebellion,' is any clue about what is to come, I've got an interesting time ahead of me," joked Scott. "It is an extremely high-energy piece that utilizes interesting colors from all of the instruments."

An active performer and clinician in classical and jazz styles, Scott teaches trombone and bass trombone at SFA and is the director of the university's jazz band, The Swingin' Aces.

She is the principal trombonist for the Orchestra of the Pines and a member of the Longview Symphony. Recently, she was featured as part of the International Trombone Festival's Cramer Trombone Choir.

She has also been a member of the Twentieth Century Unlimited Orchestra in Santa Fe, the New Mexico Music Festival in Taos, the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, the Greeley (Col.) Philharmonic and the Barnum and Bailey Greatest Show on Earth Circus Band.

Scott earned her doctorate in trombone performance from the University of North Texas, her master's from the University of Northern Colorado and two bachelor's degrees from Texas Tech University.

Tickets to the recital are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, please call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
