Sylvia Bierschenk - Oct. 24, 2007

The Stephen F. Austin State University tuba-euphonium studio, under the direction of J.D. Salas, center, will present "Tubaween" at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Stephen F. Austin State University tuba and euphonium students dressed in Halloween costumes will present "Tubaween" at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

The concert is the final event of the tuba-euphonium studio's 2007 Octubafest, which celebrates the tuba and euphonium as a solo and chamber music instrument.

J.D. Salas, SFA instructor of tuba and euphonium, said the Oct. 31st concert offers unique opportunities for his students. "It is hard to argue that the tuba's low tessitura and sometimes bombastic sounds coupled with the beautiful, melodious sound of the smaller euphonium are well suited to create the sounds that are so familiar with Halloween."

Much of the program will include original music composed for tuba-euphonium quartets and other small ensembles. There will be a few transcriptions by J.S. Bach and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. The concert will conclude with a performance by the 16-member Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble.

The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music.

Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, please call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
