SFA Regents approve faculty, staff appointments

A famous face was among the faculty appointments approved by the Stephen F. Austin State University Board of Regents at the October meeting.

Brad Maule, best known for his longtime role as Dr. Tony Jones on the daytime television show General Hospital, is now a lecturer of theater and art at SFA. Maule graduated from SFA with honors with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in theater and English. His most recent film, “Within Us,” is an SFA production and will be available on DVD.

Other faculty appointments approved for College of Fine Arts include Valerie A. Austin, visiting instructor of music; Brett A. Richardson, lecturer of music; Gary James Schott, visiting assistant professor of art; and Christopher A. Scott, instructor of music.

The appointments of Dale Spradling, visiting assistant professor of accounting, and Ted Whitmer, visiting professor of economics and finance, in the Nelson Rusche College of Business also were approved.

In the James I. Perkins College of Education, new appointments include Frankie Swift, lecturer of human services; Hallie Dianne Trautman, assistant professor of secondary education; and Layne DeBardelaben, Amy Elizabeth Durham and Michael Munro, clinical instructors of human services.

Sheryll B. Jerez’s appointment as assistant professor of environmental science in the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture was approved, as were appointments in the College of Liberal and Applied Arts, including Charles E. Kroll, senior lecturer of English and philosophy, and Rebecca J. Woods, visiting assistant professor of psychology. New appointments for the Department of Political Science, Geography and Public Administration included Alan Baily, visiting assistant professor, and Billy Monroe and Cindy Pressley, visiting instructors.

New appointments approved for the College of Sciences and Mathematics included Angela L. West, lecturer of mathematics and statistics, and Carol Athey and Susan P. Ballard, clinical instructors of nursing.

The following staff appointments were approved:

  • Admissions: Jennifer M. Bruner, regional admissions coordinator; and Douglas J. Daigle, counselor/recruiter.
  • Counseling and Career Services: Binta Yaisa Lorde and Ronald Jeffrey Smith, counselors.
  • Education: Janiece L. Buck, coordinator project certification preparation English language learners; Mary C. Nino, certification officer/Post Baccalaureate Initial Certification Coordinator; and Donnya E. Stephens, Gear Up special project coordinator.
  • Fine Arts: Christian H. Cutler, gallery director.
  • Human Services: Casey Danielle Perry, clinical audiologist.
  • Information Technology Services : Seana Lee Utley, programmer analyst II.
  • Library: Lori C. Wijntjes, writing program director/Academic Assistance and Resource Center.

The appointments of Lurah M. Bryant and Randall M. Scott as coordinators for Pineywoods Area Health Education Center were approved, as was the appointment of Amy F. Roquemore, editorial coordinator in the Office of Public Affairs.

The following changes of status were approved for the library: Susan D. Clarke from librarian II to librarian II/digital projects librarian with additional administrative duties; Shirley Dickerson from interim library director to library director; Rachel B. Galan from acting associate library director and librarian II to associate library director; Reginald L. Gossett from assistant manager library systems to manager library systems; Christine E. Hennessey from library assistant II to librarian I; David W. Justus from manager library systems to associate director library technology; and Linda L. Reynolds from interim director to director of the East Texas Research Center.

Other changes of status included: Mary Nelle Brunson, from assistant professor of elementary education to interim assistant provost and assistant professor of elementary education; Marie D. Davenport from adjunct faculty in secondary education to certification preparation coordinator; Deborah L. Sellman from coordinator of planning, resources and accountability for Academic Affairs to interim budget director; Jeffrey H. Davis, from director of development to interim director of Alumni Affairs; Mario P. Ajero from instructor of music to assistant professor of music; John W. Parker from programmer systems II to programmer systems II/interim assistant director Information Technology Services; and Stephen J. Watson from programmer systems I to programmer systems II/interim assistant director ITS.

Also granted approval for status change were: Barbara Carr from chair and professor of English and philosophy to professor of English and philosophy; Ray Darville from professor of sociology to interim chair of communication and professor of sociology; Wanda Mouton from interim chair and associate professor of communication to associate professor of communication; Becky L. Price-Mayo from lecturer of social work and interim director to lecturer of social work and director; and Casandra L. Wright from program director Academic Assistance and Resource Center to lecturer of mathematics and statistics.

New athletic appointments included Amber M. Burdge, assistant director of athletics; Stephen Brad Laird, assistant football coach; Rebecca Gay McNutt, head softball coach; Jaye Dee Nayreau, instructor/assistant women’s basketball coach; Lori Dianne Kowaleski and William Craig Snider, assistant softball coaches; and Ryder L. Peacock and Cody Evans Clark, assistant track coaches.

The following changes of status were approved for athletics: Aaron Delatoree, from intern/coach to assistant football coach; Erin Lycan from intern/coach to assistant soccer coach; Loree M. McCary from athletic trainer to athletic trainer and senior women:s administrator; Erin C. McClanahan from intern/coach to assistant volleyball coach; Brian J. McNutt from intern/coach to assistant football coach; and Brandon R. North from intern/coach to assistant football coach.

The retirement of Dr. David L. Creech as Regents Professor of agriculture was approved by regents, but Creech will continue to serve as associate director of the Mast Arboretum at SFA.

Other retirements accepted by regents included Harvey R. Brown, grant director, College of Education; Ray Eastman, associate professor of psychology; Stephanie George, lecturer of communication; Mary E. Garrett, biology laboratory coordinator; Ernest Ledger, geology professor; William J. Oliver, communication professor; and Marlin Young, provost/vice president for academic affairs.
