SFA safety officials will conduct a second round of tests on a new outdoor campus alert system Wednesday and Thursday, sounding sirens at various times during both days.
The outdoor system is designed to enable university officials to alert people on campus to the potential threat of severe weather or other dangerous situations. Nearby residents and passersby will likely hear the sirens, as well.
“This week’s tests will help us optimize the new system, ensuring the sirens can be heard throughout the campus,” said Marc Cossich, SFA chief of police. “There is no set schedule for the alarms, so they may be heard at any time of day on Wednesday or Thursday.”
The outdoor siren is part of an integrated alert system that SFA acquired from Federal Warning Systems. The system includes a mobile messaging capability that will deliver notifications to mobile devices, such as cell phones, registered with the system. The federal system complements campus e-mail and Web-site systems already used to distribute alert notifications.
