Paul Christopher and Ruth Drummond will present "The Gift of Melody: The Cello Duos of Jacques Offenbach" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, in Cole Concert Hall on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University. The concert, which is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music, is free and open to the public.
NACOGODCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present guest cellists Paul Christopher and Ruth Drummond in "The Gift of Melody: The Cello Duos of Jacques Offenbach" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, in Cole Concert Hall.
The duo released a compact disc by the same title in 2004 on the Human Metronome label. The second recording in the series, "The Perfect Gift," was released in 2005, and the third will be recorded this fall with a release scheduled for a later date.
Christopher, who served as an adjunct instructor of low strings at SFA from 1993 to 1999, is an assistant professor at Northwestern State University and the principal cellist of the Longview Symphony Orchestra. He is also a member of the Sylvan Chamber Orchestra, which is on the Texas Commission of the Arts touring roster.
Prior to his appointment at Northwestern, he served 15 years as the principal cellist of the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra and Shreveport Opera and as a member of the Premier String Quartet.
He received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from the New England Conservatory of Music and his Master of Music degree in cello performance from the University of Memphis.
Christopher will present a master class to SFA string students prior to the concert.
Drummond, principal cellist of the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra, is familiar to East Texas audiences as a soloist and chamber musician.
She is a member of the Premier String Quartet, co-founder of the New Friends Chamber Players and cellist in the Evangeline Piano Trio. She is also a longtime member of the Baroque Artists of Shreveport, playing cello, baroque cello and viola de gamba. During the summer months, she is the principal cellist of the Shreveport Summer Music Festival and Opera East Texas.
In the recent past, Drummond has studied at the Baroque Performance Institute at Oberlin College Conservatory and performed in Upper Peninsula Michigan with the Superior Music Festival and Chamber Players.
