Candidates for Dean of Student Affairs on campus this week and next

Two candidates for the position of dean of Student Affairs will be on campus this week and next to interview and meet with faculty and staff during open sessions.

Dr. Michael Kelly, dean of students and adjunct instructor of educational leadership at Northeastern Illinois University, will participate in an open campus session 2-2:30 p.m., Sept. 12, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center, Room 3.201. Jason Lambert, assistant vice president for student affairs-student life at Lamar University, will meet in an open campus session Sept. 17 at the same time and place as Kelly.

Lambert has served as assistant vice president for student affairs-student life since August 2004. He supervises directors, coordinators and advisers of the Setzer Student Center, student activities, university press, international student services and Greek life. He is an adviser to the student government association executive officers and the student senate and daily operations liaison to student government.

Lambert was director of housing for Christopher Newport University from 2002-2004 and was director of campus life for Mount Saint Mary’s College in 2001-2002. While at the University of Evansville in 1996-2001, he served as assistant dean of students, director of residence life, coordinator of Greek life and area coordinator. Previously he was fraternity adviser at Louisiana State University and counselor and residence hall supervisor at Southeastern Louisiana University.

Lambert is a doctoral student in educational leadership at Lamar University. He holds an M.Ed. in counseling and personnel services from the University of Southern Mississippi, a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Southeastern Louisiana University, and an associate degree in information systems technology from Thomas Nelson Community College.

Kelly has served as dean of students at Northeastern since 1999. He is responsible for oversight of a wide variety of student programs and services for the comprehensive urban-commuter university with 12,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Some of his areas of supervision include student judicial affairs, first-year and family orientation, the minority student mentoring program, the national student exchange, campus ministries, student government, substance abuse education and the University Ambassadors program.

In 1990-1999, Kelly was director of student judicial affairs, assistant dean of student affairs and adjunct assistant professor of policy studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Previously his work focused on student housing and advising as area coordinator with the University of Richmond, residence hall director at Kutztown University and admissions representative for Allentown Business School.

Kelly holds a doctorate in education in higher education administration from The College of William and Mary and a Master of Public Administration from Kutztown University, both in Williamsburg, Va. His Bachelor of Arts is from West Chester University in Pennsylvania.
