SFA seminar to feature local horticulturist

Tricks and techniques for using digital cameras to capture incredible garden images will be the topic of a Stephen F. Austin State University Mast Arboretum garden seminar. “Improving Your Images with Digital Photography” will be presented by Jeff Abt from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 15 in the Agriculture Building Room 118 on Wilson Drive.

Abt lives with his wife and family in Nacogdoches where for the past 20 years he has been a professional horticulturalist, landscape designer, garden and travel columnist, and lecturer. Through his work, he began taking an interest in photography. Abt now travels the world, visiting famous gardens with his camera in hand, adding photography to his list of credentials.

“A gardener has an image in his mind’s eye and creates it with earth and stone, water and plants,” explained Abt. “A photographer in a similar way creates images; but in his case, he captures what is already there while bringing to the image his own, unique interpretation.”

In addition to garden photography, Abt has also become an experienced sports photographer and photojournalist, for a total change of pace.

For more information or to register for the class, contact the SFA Mast Arboretum education office at 936-468-1832 or e-mail erodewald@sfasu.edu. Cost for the seminar is $20 for SFA garden members and $30 for non-members.
