J.D. Salas, instructor of music at Stephen F. Austin State University, will present a faculty tuba recital at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.
NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present J.D. Salas in a faculty tuba recital at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 1, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.
Salas, who joined the SFA faculty in 2006, will perform William Kraft's "Encounters II," a piece which Salas describes as "one of the most important 20th century works written for solo tuba."
For the remainder of the program, Salas will be assisted by other SFA faculty musicians.
Salas and Ron Petti, SFA's director of accompanying, will perform Dimitri Shostakovich's "Adagio," and Charles Gavin, SFA professor of music, will join the duo in presenting "Divertimento for Horn, Tuba and Piano" by David Gillingham.
Tenor Bruce Fowler will assist in performing Jeffrey Nycht's "Three Songs of War for Countertenor and Tuba," and percussionist Scott Harris will join Salas in presenting Mark Alan Taggart's "Athletic Conveyances."
A native of Alamo, in the Rio Grande Valley, Salas received his Bachelor of Music degree in tuba performance from Baylor University and his Master of Music degree from the University of Kentucky in Lexington.
Prior to his appointment at SFA, Salas was the artist/instructor of tuba and euphonium at Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand, where he served as the country's first full-time tuba-euphonium professor. He has also taught at Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky. and Marshall University in Huntington, W.V.
The recital marks the opening of SFA's second annual Octubafest, a celebration of the tuba and euphonium as a solo and small chamber music instrument.
The other four events include tuba/euphonium studio recitals on Monday, Oct. 15, and Monday, Oct. 22; a guest eupohonium recital on Wednesday, Oct. 17; and "Tubaween" on Wednesday, Oct. 31.
