Larry Johnson was “an exceptional learning leader”
Family and friends reflected on the life and contributions of Humble High School’s former principal at a special ceremony Jan. 23. The varsity basketball team presented a framed photo at the newly named Larry Johnson court, during the dedication of the Larry Johnson Sports Complex.
Johnson, who was previously the principal of Humble High School, died unexpectedly of a stroke Dec. 17, 2007. Johnson had been employed with Humble ISD for 22 years, serving as teacher, coach and principal. The Board of Trustees voted to name the athletic facilities at Humble in honor of Johnson.
A graduate of Texas A&M University, Johnson played college football and participated in four bowl games. He later earned a master’s degree at Stephen F. Austin State University. He began working for the district in 1985 as a teacher and coach at Creekwood Middle School.
Johnson became Humble Middle School principal in 2003, where students scored at the recognized or exemplary level on the social studies, reading and writing portions of the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills tests. Math scores rose 23 percent since 2004.
Johnson is survived by his wife, Pamela, and sons Marquis and Jerrod.
“The dedication to Larry Johnson could not be more appropriate, in my opinion,” said Humble ISD Superintendent Dr. Guy Sconzo. “Larry was an exceptional learning leader for kids and his ‘whatever it takes’ spirit for all kids just continues to influence and inspire us all. For me, he is forever with us.”
