Texas Tuition Rebate Opportunity
Certain undergraduates may qualify for a $1,000 tuition rebate.
To be eligible for a rebate under this program, a student must:
have taken their first college course in Fall 1997 or later;
have been a resident of Texas at all times while pursuing the degree;
have been entitled to pay in-state tuition at all times while pursuing the degree; and
have not yet graduated with a bachelor’s degree.
The law provides for the rebate if the student graduates within three or fewer attempted hours of the number of hours required to complete the degree under the catalog under which the student graduated. For example, if the degree requires 120 hours to graduate and the student ultimately graduates with 123 attempted hours or fewer, he or she may qualify for the rebate. Beginning with students admitted for the first time in fall 2005, a student must also graduate in a timely manner to earn the tuition rebate. According to the most recent revision of the law governing the tuition rebate program, a student who wants to qualify to receive the rebate must graduate within four calendar years for a four-year degree or within five calendar years for a five-year degree.
Attempted hours include every course the student has been registered for as of the official Census Date of every semester, to include:
transfer credits
developmental courses
courses that are repeated
optional internship and cooperative education courses
courses from which the student withdraws (dropped courses as well as withdrawal from the college or university)
credit received by examination and
to exclude:
the first nine (9) hours of credit by examination over the hours required for the degree being sought and/or
for students concurrently earning a baccalaureate degree and a Texas teaching certificate, required teacher education courses shall not be counted to the extent that they are over and above the free electives allowed in the baccalaureate degree program. (WARNING: This program must be completed in its entirety. Deleting any part of this program makes this exclusion null and void.)
Students must apply for the tuition rebate prior to receiving their baccalaureate degree on forms provided by their institution.
