Master of Arts in Teaching

The Master of Arts in Teaching degree is an exciting and innovative graduate program that prepares teachers for leadership positions in the secondary school setting. By exploring the roles of teacher as researcher, scholar-practitioner, and educational leader, the Master of Arts in Teaching program cultivates a learning community of faculty and students through dialogue and critical inquiry. All coursework is fully online, with some courses holding regular virtual class meetings.

This 30-hour graduate program (beginning in Fall 2018) is designed for students who have earned an undergraduate degree but are not certified to teach. Students receive Texas teacher certification through an 18-hour certification sequence that includes the following courses:

SED 527 - The 21st Century EC-12 Student
SED 522 - Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment
SED 523 - Responding to Ethical and Legal Issues in Education
SED 525 - Classroom Management and Professional Responsibilities
SED 543 - The Professional Educator
SED 541/542/544 - PBIC Internship / Student Teaching

In addition to Texas teacher certification, students take the following four courses to complete the master's degree:

SED 515: Contemporary Issues in Secondary Education
SED 560: Technology and Teaching
SED 591: Practical Inquiry and Action Research I
SED 592: Practical Inquiry and Action Research II

The learning outcomes of this graduate degree program are based on the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education professional standards.
