Stephen F. Austin State University

Student Handbook

The SFA Student Affairs Handbook

A welcome from University President Dr. Baker Pattillo:

On behalf of hundreds of faculty, staff members and administrators, I can say with confidence you made a great choice for your higher education. Stephen F. Austin has educated leaders, business people and scholars since 1923, and your decision to be here only strengthens that tradition.

You will find that SFA strives in every way to make you feel at home before you can even feel a twinge of homesickness. So, I invite you to attend a Lumberjack football game, get involved with a student organization, or simply study with friends in the library or on our beautiful campus grounds. Our faculty and staff are here to help you make the best of your time at SFA and to create an educational atmosphere that is both challenging and liberating.

You have chosen to attend SFA amid a time of exciting additions to the campus. We look forward to the dedication of the new Early Childhood Research Center and the completion of the Richard and Lucille DeWitt School of Nursing. These physical changes on our campus are symbolic of the intellectual change you will experience as a university student. As you take your classes and develop relationships with your fellow students and faculty members, you will be amazed at how much you will grow as a person. I challenge you to take advantage of these once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.

This handbook will guide you through the many choices you will make as a student at SFA and hopefully answer many of the questions you may have about being a student. There are sections on student involvement, housing regulations, academic advising, and many other resources. While your success in college is ultimately up to you, we hope this guide will be a useful tool. What it does not do, however, is replace the personal contact you get from asking questions of the friendly faces on campus. So get out there, make mom and dad proud, and be the outstanding Lumberjack we know you can be.

Sincerely
Baker Pattillo
University President, Fellow Lumberjack
