Stephen F. Austin State University

Lumberjack & Ladyjack Mascots

General Information

Welcome to the home of champions where students push themselves to the limit on the mat, at the game, and in the classroom. We appreciate your interest and wish you luck while deciding on the best spirit program and university for you!

Cheerleading as been a part of the SFA Spirit landscape for over 80 years and serves as the ambassador for spirit and Lumberjack pride at SFA. Made up of two squads; the Large Coed and Small Coed plus the Lumberjack and Ladyjack mascots, these students participate in Lumberjack football, volleyball and basketball games as well as compete at the NCA Collegiate National Championships. Like the teams that they support, the SFA Spirit creed is to work hard and be the best. All of our teams are nationally ranked and competitive. SFA has a Lumberjack position, and a Ladyjack position each year. Both mascots perform all home football games and the Lumberjack travels and performs at all away football games. The Lumberjack performs at all home men's basketball games and Ladyjack performs at all home volleyball and women's basketball games. SFA Spirit Squad members are there for homecoming, in the battle for Chief Caddo, and in the community. They bleed purple and know that a victory may be up to them. The SFA Cheer Program, which includes the SFA mascots, is not only a collection of some of the best performers from all over the country that make up an amazing program, but it is also a collection of individuals that range from current team members to alumni, that consider the program like family. So if you are ready to be a part of something special, look at trying out for one of our mascot positions. If you are interested in trying out for one of our mascot positions, please complete the Recruit Info Form. This form will collect some information that will help us stay in touch with you during the season.

SIDE NOTE FOR MASCOTS

The SFA Mascots are under the umbrella of the cheerleading program. The Lumberjack mascot will be closely associated with both cheer teams as well as all men's sporting events, and the Ladyjack mascot with both cheer teams as well as all women's sporting events. Both mascots are in attendance for all home football games, and there are also a few other special events that will require both the the Lumberjack and Ladyjack.

Yes, we offer partial scholarships for one Lumberjack and one Ladyjack Mascot. All out of state students not on alternate status will receive out-of-state waiver scholarships.

What are the responsibilities of being an SFA Mascot?

SFA Spirit Program is a major time commitment for both the fall and spring semesters. The year begins in June with our first practice, and does not end until May, after the new mascots have been chosen.

Each team practices 5 days per week, for two hours, and has additional required study hall hours. Fitness and extra practices may also be added as needed. Mascots are required to attend at least three weekly practices in the fall and all practices in the spring.

Both the Lumberjack and Ladyjack perform at all home football games. The Ladyjack also performs at home volleyball and women's basketball games. The Lumberjack performs at all home men's basketball games and travels to all athletic events.

The mascots also perform at various on-campus pep rallies, perform for various community and school events, participate in volunteer service hours, and are requested to make many personal appearances during the year.

What are the additional benefits to being an SFA Mascot?

Partial scholarships for one Lumberjack and one Ladyjack mascot. Mascots not on alternate status will receive out-of-state waivers to attend the University, the ability to pre-register for classes, costume and equipment, meal stipend when traveling, and tickets for all home football and basketball games.

Will I need to schedule my classes around cheer practices?

Yes. You will be advised in your departmental area of study. You will then need to look at classes offered and put together a schedule that works around our practice schedule.
