Cory Blake Jones has spent four years preparing for a career many will envy. After a summer 2006 internship with KFox radio station 95.5 in Lufkin, Texas, Jones graduates. Even though the 2005-2006 Communications Department Mike Shapiro Scholarship recipient will go on to interview some well known celebrities, the highlight of his undergraduate career will be interviewing 0-1 all-time in the NCAA tournament Ladyjacks coach, Lee Ann Riley. Having won the 2006 Southland Conference Championship, Riley and the Ladyjacks made their 18th trip to the NCAA Championships and their fifth NCAA Sweet 16 appearance.
The Ferris, Texas, native has worked in many capacities at SFA-TV2 and SFA's radio station KSAU 90.1. Previously a producer, a 2004-2005 on-air talent for KSAU, and Sports Director for the Nac Edition in 2006, Jones currently serves as the News Director for the station.
The radio and television major didn’t spend all his time behind a microphone or in front of a camera, though. He also spent some time holding a donations bucket. During Christmas ’04 and ’05, Jones participated in the Empty Stocking Fund drive for the city of Nacogdoches by collecting donations in front of the local Wal-Mart. The funds were used to buy Christmas gifts for children from both the city and county.
The former high school defensive end football player admits he was scared as a freshman, but realized with self-motivation; college wasn’t any more difficult than high school, where he was a member of the National Honor Society, both his junior and senior years. He also participated in the UIL Academic Competition, twice advancing to the Regional Competition, and placing 6th in News Writing.
As someone who’s been on the dean’s list four times during his college career, he says incoming students should stay focused and have a goal in mind. And, echoing many others students’ refrain, he adds, with everything centrally located, it’s easy to meet the friendly people who populate the campus.
