As Assistant Professor of Theatre, he served as Director of Graduate Studies at Michigan State University from 1969 - 1973. In 1973, he assumed responsibility for the graduate program at the University of Wyoming and later became Chair of the School. At Wyoming, Dr. Bahs was promoted to Associate and then Full Professor of Theatre. He assumed the Directorship of the SFA School of Theatre in 1988.

Dr. Bahs has taught courses in play analysis, theatre history, dramatic literature, dramatic theory and criticism, acting and directing. Currently, Dr. Bahs teaches the "directing" courses at SFA. Among the productions he has directed at SFA are: MERCHANT OF VENICE, MADWOMAN OF CHAILLOT, GLASS MENAGERIE, MURDER AT THE HOWARD JOHNSON'S (feat. the President of SFA), I DO I DO!, A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, ACCOMPLICE, KING LEAR, THE MIRACLE WORKER, A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE, CABARET, and FOLLIES.

Dr. Bahs is a published scholar and has been recognized at both a national and international level for his work in theatre. While in England, Dr. Bahs worked at CreweAlsager College and the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. In 1994, he received a distinguished Alumni Award from the Graduate School at Bowling Green University. In January of 2000, Rose Bruford College, London, England honored Dr. Bahs by naming him a Visiting Professor of Theatre. In 2001, he was selected to serve on a distinguished panel of international theatre practitioners to evaluate the theatre program at the Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts, Perth, Australia. He has also served as both a consultant and evaluator for the National Association of Schools of Theatre.
