The University Police Department, a Division of the Stephen F. Austin State University Department of Public Safety, is a team of professionals working to provide a safe environment in which the educational mission of Stephen F. Austin State University can be fully realized. The University Police Department is service-oriented and tailored to meet the needs of a progressive institution. We provide crime prevention and control, criminal investigations, traffic and parking supervision, emergency services, the maintenance of public order, patrol, and other related services.

The University Police Department has a good working relationship with the local law enforcement agencies. These agencies are Nacogdoches County Sheriff's Department, Nacogdoches Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, Texas Rangers, and the FBI. University Police officers assist the Nacogdoches Police Department in city areas adjacent to campus when requested, and University Police officers are assisted on campus by the Nacogdoches Police Department when requested. There has always been a spirit of cooperation among city, county, and campus officers. University Police officers serve city and county subpoenas and , on occasions, warrants. If city or county officers must conduct investigations or serve warrants on campus, they are assisted by the University Police.

Each semester, the University Police provides classes for residence hall supervisors, resident hall assistants and other campus leaders. University Police also presents programs relating to campus safety, theft prevention, personal safety, and sexual assault prevention. Also, articles concerning campus crime, traffic problems and safety suggestions are published in the weekly campus newspaper as the need arises.

A crime prevention program is in continuous operation. It consists of crime prevention programs given to the residence hall supervisors, resident hall assistants, and to the students. These programs deal with campus safety tips, theft prevention, personal safety, and prevention of sexual assault.

The University Police are very supportive of Stephen F. Austin's Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention Policy, which is distributed annually to both current and prospective employees and students by various departments within the University. The University Police are obligated to enforce all laws and Stephen F. Austin State University rules and regulations pertaining to possession, sale, distribution, and consumption of alcoholic beverages on university owned property, and the illegal use, possession, sale, delivery and/or manufacture of drugs will not be tolerated on university owned property.

The University Police provide 24-hour-a-day patrol protection to the University campus including all parking lots, residence halls, administration buildings, and academic buildings. University Police officers are vested with all powers, privileges, and immunities of peace officers within the county, including all streets and roads, in which the University owns, rents, leases or otherwise controls property. These powers are in accordance with V.T.C.A. Education Code, Sections 51.203 as amended by H.B. 391, effective September 1, 1987.

The University Police Department office is located at 232 E. College Street. The department is open for normal business between the hours of 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. There is an officer on duty 24 hours a day. Person requiring assistance or reporting a crime may contact the University Police Department by (936)468-2608 24 hours a day. The call will be answered by a University Police dispatcher, who is in radio contact with University Police officers. In case of an emergency, University Police may be reached by dialing "911" and reporting the emergency.
