47th Annual National Institute on Social Work and Human Services in Rural Areas

Social Work Conference

The School of Social Work at Stephen F. Austin State University will host the 47th Annual National Institute on Social Work and Human Services in Rural Areas July 11-12, 2022, on SFA’s campus. The call for proposals is now open relating to this year’s theme, “Wellness and Well-being in Rural Communities: Strengths, Challenges and Strategies.”

The conference aims to showcase diversity of rural America and provide social workers in rural areas with access to substantial professional development resources through its presentations.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS

We are interested in receiving conference proposals that are responsive to this year's theme, "Wellness and Well-being in Rural Communities: Strengths, Challenges and Strategies."  Proposals related the following topics are of particular interest:

  • building relationships among community partners (micro, mezzo and macro systems)
  • community engagement 
  • community and social determinants to health 
  • direct practice from a rural lifestyle perspective 
  • diverse and inclusive communities 
  • economic and workforce development 
  • health equity 
  • power and privilege.

Proposals should be saved as a .docx or .pdf file and submitted to Dr. Steve Cooper (see below) via email by 5 p.m., March 1, 2022. Proposals should include the following information:

  • session title
  • session length 
  • session focus (practice/skills, theory and research)
  • learning objectives (two or three) 
  • summary (30 words maximum) 
  • abstract (300 to 500 words) 
  • description of interactive elements (250 to 400 words, if applicable) 
  • biographical statement for each presenter (50 words maximum per presenter)
  • and contact information for the lead presenter. (Lead presenters will be contacted about submissions no later than April 18.)

Pre-conference event - July 10:
Sunday evening social: dinner and music on the square - $16 per person (option for multiple guests) additional expense

Registration includes the following:

  • T-shirt and conference bag
  • breakfast, lunch and dinner on Monday and Tuesday, July 11-12
  • admission to all conference sessions/events on Monday and Tuesday, July 11-12

ACCOMODATIONS

The Fredonia Hotel and Conference Center has set aside a block of rooms for the conference. Attendees wishing to reserve a room can call (936) 564-1234 and ask for the National Rural Social Work Caucus room block. Reservations must be confirmed by June 12.
