SFA follows the guidelines set forth by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Animal Welfare Act (see the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Eighth Edition), which is enforced by the USDA, to protect certain animals from inhumane treatment and neglect. The regulations are followed with respect to the animals utilized by SFA, which include: agricultural animals, horses, fish, amphibians, and wildlife (birds, mammals, etc.) The IACUC committee recognizes that many of the animal care practices at SFA constitute routine animal care. The committee, therefore, acknowledges acceptable animal management and care practices and, upon approval of the IACUC chair, exempts them from further committee review.

Apply

  1. Complete the appropriate application required for your research. See "Which application should I complete?" on this page.
  2. Send the application and supporting materials to iacuc@sfasu.edu.

Note: If the application is sent from the principal investigator, chair or dean's SFA email account, then a physical signature is not required.

Which application should I complete?

Determine if your research qualifies for the IACUC short form application by answering the following questions:

  • Will the research involve surgical procedures?
  • Will animals receive anesthetics, analgesics, and/or tranquilizers to minimize or alleviate pain or distress?
  • Will living animals be exposed to any drugs, infectious agents, radioactive materials, anesthetic agents, or recombinant DNA?
  • Is the project funded by a federal grant?

If you answer "no" to all questions, then you may use the IACUC short form application. Note that the SFA IACUC could determine that your research does not qualify for use of the short form. If that is the case, you will receive an email indicating so.

If you answer "yes" to any of the above questions, then you must use the IACUC long form application.

Application status

Please allow up to 10 business days for the IACUC to complete a Designated Member Review. Full Committee Reviews depend on the occurrence of IACUC meetings (at least once a semester).
