M.A. in Student Affairs and Higher Education
The Masters of Arts degree program in Student Affairs and Higher Education provides a strong foundation in the profession and practice of Student Affairs. It offers opportunities to develop expertise in the various areas of Student Affairs. Students gain knowledge regarding programming, student activities, program evaluation and assessment along with administration, finance, and legal and ethical standards. Students learn about the developmental stages of college students and ways to enhance the college experience. The fieldwork component of the program offers students the opportunity to apply what they have learned.
Candidates in the master's program in Student Affairs and Higher Education complete a 42 hour curriculum which includes coursework specific to Student Affairs such as college student development, leadership, administration and finance, ethical and legal issues, research and program evaluation, and a 6 hour practicum.
This graduate program prepares students to work in the following Student Affairs fields:

Student Affairs Programs Graduate Assistants
The Office of Student Affairs Programs (SAP) employs four graduate assistants.
Our graduate assistants have the opportunity to work alongside professional staff to advise university sponsored student organizations, plan large-scale and annual programs, implement a variety of initiatives, and contribute to research and assessment.
Benefits of being a Graduate Assistant in Student Affairs Programs:
- All of our graduate assistants receive a stipend, paid on a monthly basis
- Opportunities for professional development through a monthly SAP Graduate Assistant Roundtable Series, as well as involvement in various professional associations such as NACA, NCORE, NODA, and TACUSPA.
- Expenses for travel accommodations and meals are covered by the department when attending conferences and off-campus events (i.e. Alternative Breaks, Jack Camp, and retreats).
- Opportunities to network and meet local and state-wide leaders, guest speakers, and artists.

Student Affairs Programs Graduate Assistantship
- The Student Affairs Programs department provides overall development and management of areas including, Spirit Team Programs, Student Engagement Programs (Leadership and Service, Jack Camp, Fraternity & Sorority Life, Student Organizations, Traditions Council, Homecoming), Orientation & Transition Programs and Weeks of Welcome.
Orientation & Transition Programs
Orientation & Transition Programs Graduate Assistantship
- Includes Lumberjack Orientation, Weeks of Welcome, and family programs
- The Orientation Programs GA is responsible for areas of the department related to parents and family members, and Weeks of Welcome, as well as the supervision of the Orientation Student Coordinators. Service Graduate Assistantship
- The Service GA will be responsible for areas of the department related to Jacks Give Back and related programming and other areas that advance the mission of the Student Engagement area. Student Activities Graduate Assistantship
- The Student Activities Association GA is responsible for advising the student staff of the Student Activities Association, as well as oversee the SAA Cinema program. This position is very hands-on with building student leaders and creating outstanding campus programs. For more detailed information about this position, please view the document above. This student will also advise a service organization under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Student Engagement, Leadership and Service.
Application and Interview Process
Student Affairs Programs Graduate Assistant Interview Days for 2021-2022 positions
The Student Affairs Programs Graduate Assistant process is designed to replicate a professional job interview for an entry-level position within the field of Higher Education. Graduate students who are currently enrolled, or newly admitted, into an SFA graduate program are eligible to apply.
Qualifications and Skills
Student Affairs Programs GA applicants should either be admitted to a graduate program or be a current graduate student at SFA with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
Applicants should also have the following skills:
- Ability to manage multiple projects at once and work with varying deadlines
- Possess exceptional written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively to a diverse group of students
- Proficiency in several social media outlets
- Ability to work both as a team member and independently
Graduate Assistant Interview Day
If selected for an interview, applicants will be contacted via email. Selected applicants will take part in a full-day interview process with Student Affairs Programs staff.

- 9 a.m. - Informational Session (optional) - BPSC Commons
- Want insight on a particular position BEFORE you interview for the job? This is your chance! Ask questions to the current staff to get more in-depth information on the various departments within Student Affairs Programs.
- 9:30 a.m. - Presentations - BPSC Commons
- Each applicant will be required to present a 5-minute presentation on the following topic: Why do you want to be a Graduate Assistant for SFA Student Affairs Programs??Order of presentations will be determined the day of.
- 11:30 a.m. - Lunch - BPSC Cafeteria
- 1:30 p.m. - 4:55 p.m. - Interviews, Day 1 - Student Affairs Programs Department Offices
- Each applicant will be required to interview with each office within Student Affairs Programs. Each interview should last about 30 minutes, with a 5-minute break between each interview. There will be a rotation set for each applicant to follow and it will be given the day of the interviews.
