Mike Teal, RLA will present “Highways are for More Than Getting from Here to There.” A rare plant raffle will be held after the program. - Long time Houston area horticulturist Linda Gay will present “The Life and Times of a Happy Horticulturist.” Before retiring, Linda Gay served as Director of the 325 acre Mercer Arboretum in Humble for 11 years. Prior to that, she was Assistant Director for 3 years, Chief Horticulturist for 4 years, and Horticulturist for 7 years. She can now be found working at the Arbor Gate Nursery in Tomball, Texas. The lecture is free and open to the public.

- SFA Gardens’ horticulturist and writer Greg Grant will present “Gardening for Love-An Arcadian Dogtrot.” Greg will share the story of his lifelong quest to restore his grandparent’s old farmhouse and how he landscaped it with pass-a-long plants from friends and ancestors along with his own ornamental introductions. The house and garden were both featured in the July issues of Southern Living and Neil Sperry’s GARDENS magazines. The lecture is free and open to the public.

- Texas Agrilife Extension Horticulturist Tom LeRoy will present “Salad Gardening 101 for Texas Gardeners.” Tom began his 35-year career with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service right out of college, after receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Horticulture in 1975 and a Master’s Degree in Plant Breeding in 1977, both from Texas A&M University. He recently retired and now serves on a part time basis as Assistant Texas Master Gardener Program Coordinator. The lecture is free and open to the public.

- PNPC research associate Greg Grant will show off several good woody plant identification books and then lead participants through the PNPC grounds and Tucker woods learning how to identify both common and uncommon East Texas trees. Greg is author of the Kindle book, "In Greg's Garden-A Pineywoods Perspective on Gardening, Nature, and Family." Registration will take place in the Tucker House conference room. - The Stone Fort Museum will host an opening reception for the exhibit, "George Louis Crocket: Out of the Ordinary." The exhibit examines the life and times of Dr. George Crocket. As a cleric, historian, mentor and artist, Crocket forged strong ties within both the Nacogdoches and San Augustine communities. The exhibit displays Crocket's drawings, writing, and research that formed his legacy. The evening reception will include a short presentation by Friends of Historic Nacogdoches, Inc (FoHNI).

- Dr. Gerald Harp, Assistant Professor in Horticulture at Texas A&M University-Commerce will present "Landscape Soils-Growing from the Ground Up." Dr. Harp’s research focuses primarily on sustainable urban landscapes including the use of ornamental plants on building roofs. These “green roofs” absorb incoming sunlight, reducing the heat being transferred into a building, decreasing cooling costs and making the building more energy efficient. - Matthew Kwiatkowski, professor of biology at SFA, will present “Critters that Slither and Hop in Your Garden: The Reptiles and Amphibians of East Texas.” His research focuses on conservation of reptiles and amphibians as well as the signals they use in mating behavior. He is currently working with federal and state agencies, and zoos around the country on the population genetics of Louisiana Pine Snakes, a candidate species for federal protection. The lecture is free and open to the public.

In his current position as Garden Director at Moore Farms Botanical Garden, he has led the transition from a private pleasure garden to a non-profit botanical garden. Ethan has collected plants across the country and abroad but is always excited to return to the wild places of South Carolina. The lecture is free and open to the public.

- Dawn Stover, SFA Mast Arboretum Research Associate, will explore useful methods for gardeners to cost-effectively increase the number of plants in the landscape. She will teach propagation techniques including taking cuttings, sowing seeds and dividing perennials. Class members will participate in hands-on activities to reinforce instruction. Jenny graduated with a Bachelor of Science in horticulture from SFA and, after a short stint in retail, started at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden in 2009. She is now director of horticulture there. The lecture is free and open to the public.
